Top 5 Organizing Tips for a Happy Home

“Oh, that’s where that is! I’ve been looking everywhere for it!” – That is the number one phrase I hear every time I help a client organize their home.

Imagine if you actually knew where everything in your house was? Well, it’s possible, trust me! The key to keeping your home organized is creating systems that are functional and will work for your household. No one enjoys living in a messy space. When your home is decluttered, clean and organized you feel more at peace.

Try implementing these five simple tips and you’ll quickly see a positive change in how your home looks and how it makes you feel.

1. Use the same type of hangers

This is a game-changer. No matter the closet, you should always use the same type and colour hangers. Pick one and stick to it!

I personally like to use thin, velvet hangers that you can find at Homesense, Bed, Bath & Beyond or Costco. This will allow you to fit more clothes in the closet while having a uniform look.

2. Use bins and baskets

Don’t leave items loose in closets or cupboards. It’s best to always contain smaller, loose items inside a bin or basket. This will be more aesthetically pleasing and will make it easier to maintain.

3. De-clutter on a regular basis

Spring isn’t the only time you should be organizing and decluttering. I suggest looking through your belongings on a quarterly basis. Do a quick skim through your clothes, shoes, everything, and try to get rid of at least 2-4 things.

My rule is if you haven’t worn it within the last year chances are you’re not going to wear it again, so toss it! (*Unless it’s a classic item). This will help declutter your home, and if you donate the items you’ll be helping make someone else feel good, and who doesn’t love that?

4. Create designated areas/categorize

This is so important! Especially in a household with kids. If every item has a designated area everyone will know where to put things back.

Legos should have their own bin, stuffed animals in another etc. This should be the case for every room in the house. Your pantry can be separated into a baking section, pasta, sauces, spices and more. Shoes should be separated into boots, high heels, runners and so on.

5. Make it functional

This is the most important aspect of organizing that I always have top of mind when I’m organizing someone’s home. Making the space look pretty is great but people are actually living in the space so it has to be functional.

I always like to get my client’s input and find out what products they use on a regular basis and make sure they are easily accessible. So keep this in mind when you’re organizing. Make sure the items you use the most are visible and easy to reach!

The key to getting organized is to start. It may seem overwhelming but once you get a system in place it’s easy to maintain. OR just hire me to help you ;)
