Interior Design Styles

When it comes to interior design most of us have heard the terms ‘coastal,’ ‘modern,’ and ‘traditional,’ but do we really know what sets each of these styles apart? How can we be sure of which style to choose? Whether you are decorating your new custom home or need a room refresh, we are here to guide you toward the design style that best fits your needs and aspirations. Below we outline four popular interior design styles to help you start envisioning your dream home.

COASTAL DESIGN - Open air and seaside tranquility

Though coastal design is inspired by the sights and sounds of the shoreline, this style can be achieved in any home. Coastal is all about featuring natural colours and textures in a relaxed and breezy atmosphere. Furniture is often wicker, weathered wood and rattan, and fabrics light cottons and linens. Crisp whites and natural tones like sandy beige and ocean-inspired blues and greens are perfect for creating a space that feels like a vacation home all year round.

TRADITIONAL - Timeless, elegant and comforting

Inspired by the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, traditional design is a reflection of the rich history of the past. If you have an appreciation for antiques and classical art, this is the design style for you! Architectural details like crown moulding and wood panelling add elegance to the room, and rich colours like dark wood and jewel tones provide warmth and comfort. You’ll see regal influence in traditionally styled furniture like ornate detailing, and tufted upholstery. Traditional design is the perfect choice for an inviting home that will never go out of style.

MODERN - Clean lines, simplicity and natural materials

Influenced by Scandinavian and German Bauhaus design, modern design is focused on clean lines and minimalism. Natural materials like wood and leather are used in combination with reflective surfaces like metal and glass for unique contrast. A neutral colour palette and emphasis on natural light makes a space feel open and fresh. Modern design exerts a sense of simplicity in every element, and avoids any unnecessary details. If a functional and decluttered home is what you strive for, modern design is the right fit for you.

MODERN FARMHOUSE - A dynamic mix of old and new

If you’re attracted to the sleek minimalism of modern design, but enjoy the charm of rustic decor, modern farmhouse is the perfect balance of the two. Cream or white is often a dominant colour, with hints of vintage-inspired hues to give a subtle antique feel. Industrial accents and reclaimed wood are commonly used to add a rustic appeal, and clean lines layered with cozy textiles make for a space that would make anyone feel at home!
