5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Re-Designing Your Kitchen

A kitchen remodel is a big task, but with a big reward. That style you’ve always dreamed of, the details you’ve swooned over, the functionality you’ve been lacking, all coming together and delivering you a space where you can cook, entertain, and live your daily life to its fullest.

Before getting into the depths of a kitchen re-design, it’s important to ask yourself these five questions so you can be as clear and prepared as possible for the fun journey ahead.

1. Are you okay with temporarily shaking your daily life up a bit?

Unlike renovating a living room or dining room, a kitchen renovation can cause a bit of disruption in your life. You’ll have to learn how to cook without all your daily essentials, and need to be ready to live like that for a bit while your dream cooking location comes to life.

2. Are you being honest with yourself about how you actually live?

Or are you basing all your design choices on what Instagram is feeding you? Think about how you and your household actually use your kitchen. Does all upper open shelving work for your lifestyle, or would a simple accent section be better? Do you cook heavily with spices and need a spice cabinet close by? Do you pre-plan most of your meals and shopping and need a larger pantry than most?

Being realistic about how you use your kitchen will not only result in a pretty space, but one that also reduces frustrations in your everyday life. Check out our cabinet and storage solutions to get your organization’s creativity flowing.

3. What are the things you truly can’t stand about your current kitchen?

There are probably a lot of design choices in your kitchen that you’re not a fan of, which is why you’re choosing to re-design it. But what about the layout? Do you love the island where it is or do you think you’d be able to better utilize it if you moved its location?

What about your sink? Do you hate that it faces a wall and rather have it face a window, or do you want it on the island so that you can socialize more with others in the space?

Do you find that desk space completely unsuitable for your family? Is the path to the dining room too small? Finding out what you really don’t like about your current surroundings can help you to figure out what you’re really going to love.

4. What have you liked about the designs of other spaces and kitchens?

Think beyond what you’ve seen on social media and pinned on Pinterest, and start to imagine other kitchens you’ve been in. Maybe your best friend’s kitchen makes your heart sing because of its gold accents. Or maybe that kitchen in the Airbnb you stayed in was so lovely because of how it made you feel while you were in it.

Elements of spaces, the way they make you feel, listing those out will help make sure that your final kitchen design is not only pretty today but will make you smile for years to come.

5. How will you implement the elements of your personal design style into your kitchen?

Before you can even begin to answer this question, you have to know what your personal design style is. Luckily we have a quiz just for that!

Once you’ve narrowed down your design style, it’s time to decide what you like for you AND your kitchen. Liking something just because it’s pretty and liking it because it flows with your home’s look and feel are two different things. So make sure to keep coming back to who you are, who your home is, and how the two come together.
